Pahiyas Festival: When the Farm Comes to the Fiesta

There are countless Philippine fiestas honoring San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, but none can match the color and creativity of Pahiyas festival in Lucban town, Quezon province. Houses are dressed up in kiping (rice wafers), produce and local materials as they vie for the title of Pahiyas winner. In the afternoon of the saint’s feast day, a procession of everything but the kitchen sink slowly snakes around the town. Pahiyas is not just a thanksgiving celebration for the harvest, but also where the harvest itself becomes the celebration.
