Where can you find two shops called Honesty and Conscience? Not in the big city, no. Only on these weather-beaten islands, where life is still simple. Batanes, the northernmost island group in the Philippines, has not changed so much since the time of the Spanish colonizers. Today, churches are still the centers of life on the islands and though mainly not in maritime use, the lighthouses are popular among tourists.
Batanes has long been on my bucket list and this year, I finally crossed it off the list. The cost of travel deters many people from these islands and few foreigners venture this way, opting instead for resort islands and beach towns in central Philippines where sunny skies are almost guaranteed. I went in early March, when it was still chilly and gray. But it was still beautiful and made every appearance of the blue sky feel like a blessing.
See for yourself why Batanes is a photographer’s dream.
